Department of Water and Sanitation
18 September 2019
The use of water from the Liebenbergsvlei river for agricultural purposes during the months of October and November 2019 is limited and prohibited.
The water and sanitation department announced this in Government Gazette 42704.
According to the department, it is necessary to shut down the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel system for the required inspection and maintenance during the months of October and November 2019.
This will create a water shortage that requires the limiting of water use.
The area concerned is the farms riparian to the Liebenbergsvlei River from the Sol Plaatjie Dam wall to the confluence of the Liebenbergsvlei River with the Wilge River.
The area is situated within the Upper Vaal Water Management Area.
The limitation and prohibition of the taking of water from the Liebenbergsvlei River for agricultural purposes will apply from 1 October 2019 until 30 November 2019.
The department pointed out that, in imposing the limitation, preference was given to the “maintenance of the Reserve, treated all water users on a basis that is fair and reasonable, considered the actual extent of the water shortage, the likely effects of the water shortage on the water users, the strategic importance of any water use and any water rationing or water use limitations by a water services institution having jurisdiction in the area concerned under the Water Services Act (Act 108 of 1997)”.
