Validity of Visas and Permits Extended

August 3, 2020

Department of Home Affairs

Valid temporary residence visas for foreigners in South Africa have been extended until 31 October 2020.

The home affairs department published amended Directions in Government Gazette 43572.

The amended Directions were drawn up in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

According to Directions published in Gazette 43162 in March 2020, the visa concessions apply to foreigners who hold valid temporary residence visas that are due to expire or have expired during the national state of disaster.

The concessions enable foreigners to reapply for visas or a visa exemption without obtaining authorization to remain in South Africa.

The extension also applies to the validity period of asylum seeker permits, refugee status and Lesotho special permit.

Persons whose visas expired from 15 March 2020 and who remained in South Africa during the national state of disaster will not be declared an undesirable person in terms of the Immigration Act of 2002 when leaving the country during the period of the national state of disaster up to and including 31 October 2020.

The amended Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
