Upper Limits of Salaries of Municipal Councils Set Down

The upper limits of the salaries, allowances and benefits of the different members of municipal councils have been determined.

The cooperative governance department published the upper limits in Government Gazette 46470 in terms of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act.

The upper limits focus on the annual total remuneration packages of full-time councillors; annual total remuneration package or allowance in respect of appointed councillors; allowance in respect of councillors serving in the governance and intergovernmental structures of organised local government; annual total remuneration packages of part-time councillors; allowances of full-time and part-time councillors; cell phone allowance for councillors and pension, provident or retirement annuity fund contributions and medical benefits of councillors.

In terms of a Grade 6 municipal council, the upper limits of the total remuneration package for executive mayor or mayor stands at R1,446,388; R1,168,131 for speaker, deputy executive mayor or deputy mayor; R1,100,361 member of the executive committee or mayoral committee, whip or chairperson of a subcouncil and R1,068,083 for chairperson of oversight committee.

The Determination of Upper Limits of Salaries, Allowances and Benefits of Different Members of Municipal Councils came into effect on 1 July 2021.
