Transformation in Sport to be Boosted

July 24, 2020

Department of Sports, Arts and Culture

The sports, arts and culture department remains determined to facilitate transformation in sport in South Africa.

Deputy minister of sports, arts and culture, Nocawe Mafu, emphasized this during the Sports, Arts and Culture Department Budget Vote 2020/21 in parliament.

“Let me unequivocally and without any fear of contradiction categorically state that neither COVID-19 itself or attendant budget adjustments would in any way adversely affect our determination to ensuring that there is transformation in sport,” she said.

The deputy minister added that the department will “with more added energy” implement, in consultation with national sport federations, the recommendations outlined in the 2019/2020 report on sport transformation by the Eminent Persons Group.

“In giving traction to transformation in sport, we recognize that as government, we must also provide the necessary legislative and policy tools, that would ensure that transformation in sport happens,” she said.

The department plans to conclude the remaining stakeholder consultations on the Draft Women in Sport Policy and unveil and gazette the Policy by no later than March 2021.
