Department of Communications
The deadline for comment on the National Public Broadcasting Service has been extended.
At the end of June 2018, the communications department called for written proposals on the review of public broadcasting.
Some of the issues to be considered included the mandate, size and scope of the public broadcaster, governance framework and the carriage of public channels by pay channels.
According to the department, input received will inform and be included in the comprehensive policy broadcasting review to get underway in due course.
Input is now invited until 31 August 2018.
According to the statement, the department will also be, in conjunction with the South African Broadcasting Corporation, hosting a two-day Public Broadcasting Review Colloquium.
The date of the Colloquium will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, the deputy minister of communications, Pinky Kekana, announced, during an address at the Digital Transformation Congress in Johannesburg, that a Community Media Summit will be held at the end of July 2018.
The summit will focus on the positioning of community media going forward.
Government has identified the “digitization of community media as a critical component of developing and diversifying the media sector efficiently.”
