Department of Basic Education
Schools will reopen on 15 February 2021.
The basic education department confirmed this in a statement on the reopening of schools for the 2021 academic year.
Speaking during a media briefing on the basic education sector plans for the opening of schools, deputy minister of basic education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, also announced that School Management Teams will report for duty on Monday, 25 January 2021 and teachers shall follow on Monday, 1 February 2021.
According to the deputy minister, the revised school calendar for 2021 had originally scheduled teachers to return on 5 January 2021 and learners on 27 January 2021.
However, due to rising Covid-19 infection rates and deaths during a second wave, the Council of Education Ministers in conjunction with the National Coronavirus Command Council and Cabinet decided to delay the reopening of both public and private schools by two weeks.
The deputy minister emphasized that the delayed reopening includes private schools.
The department will also work closely with the nine provincial education departments to “establish the true extent of the impact of the virus, resulting from the unfortunate demise of educators, workers and leaders in the sector, especially during the December/January holidays”.
