SASSA Shines Light on COVID-19 SRD Grant

South African Social Security Agency

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is to open its system again for approved applicants to change their preferred method of payment for the special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant.

In a statement, SASSA announced that the window period is scheduled for Monday 31 August to Sunday 6 September 2020, 24 hours a day.

Beneficiaries are able to change from receiving their grants at the post office to receiving them through their personal bank accounts.

They also have the opportunity to change from one bank to another if they prefer to.

SASSA confirmed that the payment of the COVID-19 grant is quicker if paid into a bank account and, therefore, applicants without bank accounts are encouraged to open one.

SASSA also announced that clients who chose to receive their special COVID-19 SRD grant through cash transfer will get their August 2020 payment through this preferred method.

“They must ensure that the cellphone numbers they provided to SASSA to receive payments, are registered in their own names and not names of other people like relatives or neighbours.”

In another statement, the social development department confirmed that work on the practicalities related to the implementation of the economic stimulus intervention for the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector has been undertaken.

Four areas of intervention are being focused on including employment and protection in the ECD sector; employment creation and work exposure; containment of and mitigation against the spread of COVID-19 and the massification of registration of ECD programmes.

“The package will not only create employment opportunities for youth but also provide support aimed at unemployment risk-reduction interventions in the sector.”

Details on the ECD economic stimulus package will be communicated as soon as they have been finalised and approved.
