Rules prescribing the procedure for the election of the President of South Africa and Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly have been published.

The Office of the Chief Justice published the rules in Government Gazette 42386.

The Rules for the First Sitting of the National Assembly, National Council of Provinces and Provincial Legislatures also prescribe the procedure for the election of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons of the National Council of Provinces, Premier of a Province, and Speaker and Deputy Speaker of a Provincial Legislature.

The President is elected at the first sitting of Parliament after national and provincial elections.

The National Assembly elects the President from among its members.

The Chief Justice oversees the election.

The rules focus on presiding officer, returning officer and assistant returning officers, nomination of candidates, meeting, ballot, invalid ballot papers, counting of votes and unforeseen procedural matters.
