Rules Board for Courts of Law Amends Rules

The Rules Board for Courts of Law has amended rules of court.

The rules, published in Government Gazette 43856, were amended in terms of section 6 of the Rules Board for Courts of Law Act:


• Notice 1156 – Amendment of Rules Regulating the Conduct of the Proceedings of the Magistrates’ Courts of South Africa – amendments focus on claims, fees in district court and regional court civil matters, liability for the fees of a mediator and fees to advocates – in effect on 1 December 2020.
• Notice 1157 – Amendment of the Rules Regulating the Conduct of the Proceedings of the Several Provincial and Local Divisions of the High Court of South Africa – new Rules 35 on Discovery, Inspection and Production of Documents; 45A Suspension of Orders by the Court and 65 on Commissioners of the Court – in effect on 1 December 2020;
• Notice 1158 – Amendment of the Rules Regulating the Conduct of the Proceedings of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa – amendments focus on electronic notification and rulings of Taxing Master – in effect on 1 December 2020.

Meanwhile, in Gazette 43861, the justice and constitutional development department published a list of courts for each regional division to adjudicate civil disputes.

The list was drawn up in terms of the Magistrates’ Courts Act.

The notice is in effect from 1 December 2020.
