Regulations to prohibit the production, distribution, import, export, sale and use of persistent organic pollutants are on the cards.

The environment, forestry and fisheries department published the draft regulations for comment in Government Gazette 43747.

They were drawn up in terms of the National Environmental Management Act.

The aim of the draft regulations is to prohibit the production, distribution, import, export, sale and use of the substances listed in regulation 3.

Substances include hexabromocyclododecane; polychlorinated naphthalenes and short-chain chlorinated paraffins.

Comment is invited within 30 days of the date of publication.
