Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents in Place

Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents are in place.

The employment and labour department published the Regulations in Government Gazette 44348 in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The Regulations apply to an employer or a self-employed person who carries out work at a workplace which may expose any person to a hazardous chemical agent (HCA) at the workplace and a manufacturer, importer, supplier or retailer of an HCA that is intended for use at a workplace.

The Regulations focus on, inter alia, information, instruction and training; duties of persons who may be exposed to hazardous chemical agents; control of exposure to hazardous chemical agents; personal protective equipment and facilities; classification of hazardous chemical agents; packaging of hazardous chemical agents and disposal of hazardous chemical agents.

Meanwhile, the department has published a raft of notices in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act outlining the annual increase in medical tariffs (5.47%) in various medical sectors:


• Gazette 44344 – private ambulance services – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44345 – dental services – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44346 – dental services – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44347 – orthotists/prosthetists – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44354 – chiropractic services – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44355 – renal care – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44356 – wound care and blood services – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44357 – social worker services and psychologists – in effect from 1 April 2021;
• Gazette 44358 – private hospitals and psychiatric and private rehabilitation hospitals – in effect from 1 April 2021.
