Regulations for Hazardous Biological Agents in Place

Regulations for Hazardous Biological Agents (HBA) are in place.

The employment and labour department published the Regulations in Government Gazette 46051 in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The Regulations were published for comment in July 2020.

They apply to every employer or self-employed person at a workplace where an HBA is produced, processed, used, handled, stored or transported or exposure to an HBA may occur.

The Regulations focus on, inter alia, classification of biological agents; information, instruction and training; duties of persons who might be exposed to HBAs; risk assessment for HBAs; exposure monitoring of HBAs; medical surveillance; records; prevention and control of exposure to HBAs; personal protective equipment and facilities; disposal of HBAs and HBAs health and safety technical committee.
