Radioactive Waste Management Fund Bill Drawn Up

April 4, 2022

Department of Mineral Resources and Energy

The Draft Radioactive Waste Management Fund Bill has been drawn up.

The mineral resources and energy department published the draft bill in Government Gazette 46147 for comment.

The draft bill aims to:

• establish a trust to provide for the collection of funds to be disbursed to the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute for long-term management of high-level radioactive waste;
• provide for its governance and administration; and
• provide for matters connected therewith.

The proposed legislation will not apply to low-level and intermediate-level waste.

According to the department, the Radioactive Waste Management Policy and Strategy calls for the setting up of a Radioactive Waste Management Fund.

Generators of radioactive waste are expected to contribute to the Fund in terms of the polluter pays principle.

Comment is invited until 20 May 2022.
