Petroleum Products Amendment Bill in the Pipeline

July 13, 2022

A Draft Petroleum Products Amendment Bill is in the pipeline.

Parliament published the draft bill’s explanatory summary in Government Gazette 46688.

The private member’s bill was drawn up by Kevin Mileham, a Democratic Alliance (DA) member of parliament.

The draft bill aims to amend and remove provisions contained throughout the Petroleum Products Act that directly and indirectly provide the mineral resources and energy minister with the ability to determine or influence the price of petroleum products in South Africa.

The draft bill also seeks to de-regulate the fuel sector in South Africa in order for fuel retailers to determine their own prices.

“This will result in lower fuel prices as retailers compete to attract customers.”

The DA plans to table the draft bill in parliament.
