Parliament is to be suspended after the sitting of the national council of provinces on 19 March 2020 until further notice.
In a statement, parliament announced that the decision to suspend its work follows a special meeting between Presiding Officers, chief whips and party representatives this morning to discuss the parliamentary programme and to receive a briefing on institutional arrangements in the light of the president’s announcement of a national state of disaster due to the coronavirus.
The national assembly (NA) will sit on 18 March to deal with, inter alia, the 2020 Division of Revenue Bill and the Judicial Matters Amendment Bill.
Thereafter, the business of the NA, which includes sittings of the house, committees and public hearings, will be suspended until further notice.
Parliament will also be closed to the public until further notice.
