Nuclear New Build Programme on Track

August 31, 2021

Department of Mineral Resources and Energy

The mineral resources and energy department is to initiate preparations for the procurement of the 2 500MW Nuclear New Build Programme (NNBP).

This follows the National Electricity Regulator of South Africa’s concurrence of 26 August 2021 on the Ministerial Determination in terms of section 34 of the Electricity Regulation Act of 2006 with respect to 2 500MW of new nuclear energy generation capacity.

In a statement, the department confirmed that it plans to release the Request for Proposal at the end of the 2021/22 financial year.

According to the department, an assessment of the responses on the Request for Information issued in June 2020 indicates market appetite and feasibility for the implementation of the NNBP in South Africa.

“The Department aims to complete the procurement of the 2 500MW nuclear programme in 2024 in line with the five-year Strategic Plan and the Medium-Term Strategic Framework to ensure security of energy supply.”

The department added that the procurement of the 2 500MW NNBP in 2024 provides “adequate time for construction, commissioning, and connection to the electricity grid of this new capacity to ensure continued security of supply”.
