Select Committee on Social Services
The select committee on social services has passed the National Public Health Institute of South Africa Bill and returned it to the national assembly for concurrence.
The section 76 bill was tabled in May 2017.
It aims to provide for the setting up of the National Public Health Institute.
The Institute would seek to conduct disease and injury surveillance and to provide specialised public health services, public health interventions, training and research directed towards the major health challenges affecting South Africa’s population.
The national assembly passed the bill in August 2018 and sent it to the national council of provinces for concurrence.
During its deliberations, the portfolio committee on health introduced new clauses to the bill including on composition of the board; appointment of members of the board; disqualification from membership of the board; appointment, performance agreement and removal of chief executive officer and annual report.
The select committee sought comment on the bill in October 2018.
