National Lotteries Commission Referred to SIU

The Presidency

President Ramaphosa has referred the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) to the Special Investigating Unit for investigation.

Proclamation 32 was published in Government Gazette 43885.

Included in the terms of reference is the investigation of any alleged serious maladministration in connection with the affairs of the NLC; improper or unlawful conduct by employees or officials of the NLC; unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property; unlawful, irregular or unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure or practice having a bearing upon State property; intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property and unlawful or improper conduct by any person, which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public or any category thereof.

The investigation is to focus on the period between 1 January 2014 and the date of publication.

Under the spotlight includes maladministration in relation to investment of funds in the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the allocation of money in the Fund to beneficiaries not entitled in terms of the Lotteries Act of 1997.
