Department of Transport

Measures to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19 in the public transport services have been amended.

The transport department published the amendment to Public Transport Services Directions in Government Gazette 43348.

The Directions were published in Gazette 43272 on 4 May 2020 in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

A new direction 8 on public transport operation is inserted.

Previously the direction provided operating times for public transport.

The new direction refers to public transport operation and stipulates that intra-provincial, metropolitan areas and districts public transport is permitted to operate and that the use of transport for food delivery services is permitted.

Detail on the transportation of persons rendering essential or permitted services is also provided.

The amendment came into effect on the date of publication.

Meanwhile, the department has issued speaking notes by the transport minister, Fikile Mbalula, on the recently released Directions on the determination of commencement of services and extension for validity period of learner’s licences, driving licence cards, licence discs, professional driving permits and registration of motor vehicles published in Gazette 43339 on 20 May 2020.

Driving licence testing centres, registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools will resume their services with effect from 1 June 2020, subject to the hygiene, disinfection control, social distancing and sanitizing measures contemplated in direction 5.

Direction 5 sets out the provision of improved access and hygiene and disinfection control for the various facilities.
