Department of Economic Development
The Market Inquiry into the land-based public transport sector will now be completed by December 2020.
The economic development department republished the amended terms of reference in Government Gazette 43474.
The amended terms of reference were first published in Gazette 43457.
The Inquiry, conducted by the Competition Commission, got off the ground on 7 June 2017.
It is designed to understand the general state of competition in the land-based public passenger transport sector.
The Commission holds the view that there are “features or a combination of features in the industry that may prevent, distort or restrict competition, and/or to achieve the purpose of the Competition Act.”
The Inquiry was initially expected to be completed by 30 September 2019 but was extended last year to 31 March 2020 to allow for further discussions on proposed recommendations.
At the end of March, it was further extended until 30 June 2020.
Upon completion of the Inquiry, a report will be published in the Gazette.
According to the latest amended terms of reference, in light of the disruptions caused by the declaration of the state of natural disaster, the Commission decided to extend the completion date to allow for sufficient time for engagement on proposed recommendations.
