Links Between Energy and Mining Sectors Highlighted

The mining sector needs to review its energy consumption patterns so as to de-carbonise, decentralize and digitalise.

The energy minister, Jeff Radebe, emphasised this during an address on enhancing links between the energy and mining sectors at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town.

According to the minister, decreasing costs of renewables and the increasing reliability of hybrid power technologies were fueling the mining sector’s interest in renewables.

“The just energy transformation trajectory has to accommodate natural resources endowment, economic conditions and promote our natural competitive advantage as well as embracing new cleaner and sustainable energy technologies.”

The minister stressed that the energy intensive mining industry is “intricately and inextricably linked to the energy sector”.

The two sectors need to hold more discussions to ensure that, as the energy sector goes through a “just energy transition and transformation”, the mining sector is kept abreast of the changes.
