Levies on Medical Schemes Set Down

April 14, 2021

Department of Health

Levies on medical schemes from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022 have been set down.

The health department published the levies in Government Gazette 44436 terms of Section 2 of the Council for Medical Schemes Levies Act.

The levy, drawn up by the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), stands at R38.67 per member per year.

The levy is to be paid in two equal instalments:

• first instalment to be paid no later than 30 April of the levy year, and the
• second instalment to be paid no later than 31 July of the levy year.

The notice points out that if a transfer of principal members is in process and not finalised on 31 December 2020, the transferor must pay the levy in respect of the members to be transferred.

It also indicates that the CMS is awaiting approval for the new levy proposed for 2020/21 and 2021/22 and therefore the current levy is being imposed at the 2019/20 approved rate.

The adjusted levy will be announced as soon as approval for the new levy for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial periods is received.

In February 2021, the CMS called for comment on the proposed levy for 2021/22. It stood at R42.27 per principal member per year.
