Levies on Medical Schemes Set Down

April 12, 2022

Department of Health

Levies on medical schemes have been set down.

The health department published the levy in Government Gazette 46217 in terms of Section 2 of the Council for Medical Schemes Levies Act.

According to the notice, the Council for Medical Schemes is awaiting approval for the new levy proposed for the 2022/23 financial year and, therefore, the levy is being imposed at the 2021/22 financial year approved rate.

Once approval for the new levy has been received, a notice indicating the adjustment to the levy already levied to the schemes will be published.

The levy to be paid with effect from 1 April 2022 is R42.27 per member per year.

This will be adjusted once the new levy has been approved.

In Gazette 46207, the department published a call by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) for retention fees for the listed medicines to be paid by 26 April 2022.

Applicants have until 15 April 2022 to notify SAHPRA of their intention to retain the registration of the products.
