Karoo Regional Spatial Development Framework Outlined

The region for the Karoo Regional Spatial Development Framework has been delineated.

The agriculture, land reform and rural development department announced the delineation in Government Gazette 43822.

It was made in terms of Section 18 (3) of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act.

Section 18 focuses on the Regional Spatial Development Framework.

The Regional Spatial Development Framework is designed to guide spatial planning, land development and land use management in any region of South Africa.

In particular, Section 18 (3) stipulates that the minister, after consultation with the premier and the municipal council responsible for a geographic area, may declare any geographic area in South Africa to be a region for the purpose of the section when necessary to give effect to national land use policies or priorities in any specific geographic area of South Africa in addition to the spatial development framework applicable to such area.

According to the department, the region will cover portions of the geographic areas of the provinces of Western Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape.

The affected district and local municipalities are listed.

Meanwhile, the department recently published detail on the state agricultural land allocation plan.

Included is the advert to lease state agricultural land, online application and application form, list of properties and contact persons.

The application process kicked off on 15 October 2020.
