Department of Science and Technology

The list of radio frequency spectrum exempted for use within the declared Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Areas (CAAA) will soon be announced.

The science and technology department declared this in a statement on radio frequency spectrum use in the Karoo CAAA.

Regulations on the Protection of the Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Areas, effective from 15 December 2018, stipulate that the use of the radio frequency spectrum from 100 MHz to 25.5 GHz, and radio transmissions therein, will be prohibited within the Karoo CAAA from 15 December 2019.

However, spectrum to be used can be exempted from this prohibition in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 3 of Schedule B of the Regulations.

In November 2018, the department called for comment on the proposed list of radio frequency spectrum to be exempted.

Following consideration of the written responses received, the science and technology minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, has decided that no public hearings on the matter will be held.

The final list will be published in the Government Gazette.
