International Mobile Telecommunications Licensing Process on Track

The list of applications for the invitation to apply on the licensing process for international mobile telecommunications has been released.

The Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) published the list in Government Gazette 44101.

The invitation to apply on the licensing process for international mobile telecommunications in respect of the provision of mobile broadband wireless access services for urban and rural areas using the complimentary bands, IMT700, IMT800, IMT2600 and IMT3500 was published in Gazette 43768 in October 2020.

The invitation pointed out that South Africa experiences continued growth in demand for more spectrum due to significant growth in traffic.

“To address South Africa’s bandwidth deficiency, the currently assigned bandwidth of 609 MHz high-demand spectrum will be increased to 1015 MHz through the current assignment processes.”

ICASA holds the view that the licensing of IMT700, IMT800, IMT2600 and IMT3500 will contribute a significant bandwidth towards achieving the SA Connect targets.

According to ICASA, six applications were received on 28 December 2020.
