An Independent Assessor has been appointed to investigate the affairs of the Vaal University of Technology.
The higher education and training department announced the appointment in Government Gazette 42461 in terms of the Higher Education Act.
According to the terms of reference, the overall aim of the investigation is to advise the higher education and training minister on the source and nature of problems facing the institution and measures required to restore good governance and management at the Vaal University of Technology.
The various allegations and counter allegations made by stakeholders, the current situation of the university governance and executive management structures, the financial policy and procedures of the institution and the findings of the forensic investigations are some of the issues under the microscope.
The Independent Assessor will be expected to make recommendations on the restoration of good governance and management and what action, if any, ought to be taken.
A report must be produced within 90 days from the date of publication of the notice.
It needs to “contain findings of the investigation together with the reasons upon which the findings are based and recommendations of appropriate measures and reasons why such measures are needed”.
