Increase in COIDA Monthly Pensions on the Cards

An increase in monthly pensions in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act is on the cards.

The employment and labour department invites comment on the proposed increase in Government Gazette 46244.

The department plans to increase monthly pensions payable in terms of Section 49(4) and 54(1) (a), (b), (c) and (d) by 4.5% with regards to accidents that occurred before 31 March 2022 as well as occupational diseases diagnosed before 31 March 2022.

The increase will apply from 1 April 2022.

The department also seeks comment on its intention to amend Schedule 4 on the manner of calculating compensation for accidents that occur from 1 April 2022 as well as occupational diseases diagnosed from 1 April 2022.

Comment is invited within 60 days of the date of publication.

The department also announced an increase in the maximum amount of earnings on which the assessment of an employer shall be calculated.

An amount of R529 264 per employee per annum is prescribed as the maximum amount on which an assessment of an employer shall be calculated with effect from 1 March 2022.
