January 18, 2019

Independent Communications Authority

The comment period for the Draft Sports Broadcasting Services Amendment Regulations has been extended.

The draft regulations were published for comment in Government Gazette 42115 on 14 December 2018.

The proposed regulations break up listed sporting events and codes into three groups:

• Group A – compulsory listed national sporting events for free-to-air with full coverage;
• Group B – national sporting events offered to subscription broadcasting licensee on a non-exclusive basis under sub-licencing conditions; and
• Group C – minority and developmental sporting events to be broadcasting by subscription and free-to-air.

Broadcasting services that acquire or don’t acquire rights will need to inform other broadcasting services within 5 days of acquiring or not acquiring the rights.

A review of the listed events will take place every three years.

The plan is to finalise the review of the regulations by 31 March 2019.

Comment is now invited until 15 March 2019.

The extension follows written requests to extend from stakeholders.
