Hydrogen Society Roadmap Launched

February 21, 2022

Department of Science and Innovation

The Hydrogen Society Roadmap (HSRM) has been launched.

Speaking at the launch, the higher education, science and innovation minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, described the launch as “amongst the critical and leading instruments towards our economic recovery and developing our economy”.

Cabinet approved the extension of the HSRM on 14 September 2021 for the next ten years.

In a statement at the time, cabinet pointed out that the HSRM gives effect to the Hydrogen South Africa Strategy approved by cabinet in 2007 to prepare the country for a hydrogen economy.

It added that the HSRM builds on what has been achieved in the past 10 years to “prepare South Africa to move from research and development to manufacturing and commercialization”.

During his address, the minister indicated that the science and innovation and higher education and training departments are “working together to scale up training and reskilling programmes across South Africa to ensure that the requisite infrastructure, curriculum and lecturers are in place to educate the next generation of employees and participants for the hydrogen economy”.

He added that the science and innovation department is working with private sector partners to draw up an updated Research Development and Innovation Strategy to support the development of a domestic fuel cell manufacturing sector.

“A number of MoUs have been signed with leading energy companies both in the private and State-owned to co-fund and co-create future technologies for the hydrogen economy”, he said.

Meanwhile, speaking during the 2022 State of the Nation Address debate in parliament last week, the minister announced that a ministerial task team has been set up to oversee work to conduct feasibility studies on the new University of Science and Innovation and a new Crime Detection University.

According to the minister, a final report will be submitted by the end of the year.
