Housing agency bill subject to parliamentary hearings

October 31, 2008

Portfolio Committee on Housing

The portfolio committee on housing has called for submissions on the recently tabled Housing Development Agency Bill, such submission to be in written form and received no later than 28 February 2008, according to advertisements placed in the national press.

The purpose of the legislation is to supplement both municipality and local government efforts to acquire, hold, develop and release land for residential and community purposes and for the creation of sustainable human settlements.

In creating a government agency for such a purpose, this recently tabled bill expressly points to the fact that the agency so created will only supplement the current activities of municipalities and play a supportive role.

Assistance will be given by the agency to the completion of projects, the upgrading of human settlements and to deal with emergency housing solutions.
