Hearings on Contract Cleaning Sector Minimum Wages Underway

The department of labour is currently holding public hearings on the Contract Cleaning Sector across the country. The purpose of these hearings is to consult interested parties on the review of the sector’s minimum wages.

Hearings have already been held in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Mpumalanga.

According to a statement, the next hearings to be held will take place in the Free State, Northern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal between 2 and 5 November 2018.

In terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the current sectoral determination which governs the minimum wage and conditions of employment for the Contract Cleaning Sector, started on 1 January 2018 and ends on 30 November 2018.

The current prescribed minimum wage per hour is R20,74 in metropolitan councils, R20 in all areas in Kwazulu-Natal and R18,90 in Area C which is the rest of South Africa.
