Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development

Comment is sought on Draft Guidelines for the Transportation of Live Animals by Sea.

Published by the agriculture, land reform and rural development department, the Draft Guidelines are designed to provide evidence-based animal welfare standards for transporting live animals by sea from South Africa.

They also seek to ensure that appropriate animal welfare standards are maintained during all associated processes and that all parties involved in the transport of live animals by sea take full responsibility in ensuring that the standards outlined in the guidelines and applicable legislation(s) are implemented and maintained from the pre-journey period until during offloading at final destination.

The draft guidelines apply to sheep, goats, cattle and buffaloes.

Transportation by sea covers the entire journey from the farm of origin to the final destination in the importing country.

The Draft Guidelines focus on, inter alia, requirements for facilities, pre-journey planning and operations, daily care and management of animals on board, veterinary procedures, contingency planning for emergencies, documentation required and requirements for the minimum space area according to species.

Comment is invited until 30 April 2021.
