Four Candidates in the Running for Chief Justice

November 19, 2021

The Presidency

Four candidates have been submitted to the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of political parties for consideration for the position of Chief Justice of South Africa.

In a statement, the presidency announced that president Ramaphosa selected the four candidates after considering the Report of the Nomination Panel.

In September 2021 president Ramaphosa called for public nominations for the position of Chief Justice.

In an earlier statement, the presidency indicated that, in order to “promote transparency and encourage public participation, President Ramaphosa has decided that South Africans should take part in the choice of the next Chief Justice”.

In October, the presidency announced that 8 nominees had been shortlisted for the position of Chief Justice.

Objections regarding the nominees were invited until 15 October 2021.

564 public submissions were received.

The Panel gave each nominee an opportunity to comment on the public submissions made in respect of his or her nomination.

The Panel submitted its report to the president at the end of October.
