Feedback on Research Tax Incentives in 2015

November 11, 2014

Department of Science and Technology

Science and technology minister Naledi Pandor says by next year it should be clearer what effect the government’s tax incentives for research and development have had.

In a written reply to a question in parliament, the minister points out that it is only since the beginning of this financial year that incentive recipients have to report on progress of approved projects and what impact the inducement has had on their research and development.

To date, 30 out of 97 companies have provided the required information. Her department is analysing the data and will incorporate the findings and evaluation in the 2014/15 report to parliament.

She also says the incentive guidelines, which have been published for comment and will be discussed with trade and industry before the end of this month, will provide more clarity on what activities are likely to qualify.
