July 14, 2020

National Nuclear Regulator

Eskom has applied to the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) for a nuclear installation licence.

The NNR published the notice of application in Government Gazette 43514.

According to the notice, the licence is intended to site, construct, operate and decommission a transient interim storage facility at the Koeberg nuclear power station.

The storage facility will be located within the Koeberg owner controlled area and will remain operational until about ten years after the end of the commercial operation of Koeberg.

The primary aim of the storage facility is for six original steam generators (OSG) to be housed horizontally in the OSG interim storage facility.

At a later stage, the storage facility will be used for the dry storage of used fuel casks.

Representations are invited within 30 days of the date of publication.
