Employment Stimulus Relief Fund for Early Childhood Development Launched

February 8, 2021

Department of Social Development

The Employment Stimulus Relief Fund for Early Childhood Development (ECD) Services has been launched.

In a statement, the social development department announced that, as part of relief measures to cushion the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on the early childhood development programmes and services, R496 million has been received to assist the ECD sector.

The Fund is designed to sustain and create employment opportunities in the sector “in light of the high unemployment rate and job losses occasioned by the pandemic”.

A project proposal was submitted to national treasury to access funding for the Presidential Employment Stimulus package for the ECD sector.

“The proposal focused on four interrelated policy imperatives including; employment protection in the ECD sector, employment creation, containing the spread of COVID-19, and registration roll out for ECD programmes.”

The department points out that only one application per ECD service can be made due to potential delays with processing multiple applications.

A maximum of up to R4 470 per staff member will be provided.

Applications opened on 5 February 2021 and will close at 23h59 on 19 February 2021.
