Emissions Of Sulphur Dioxide To Be Increased

May 28, 2019

The Minister of Environmental Affairs has amended the listed activities and associated minimum emission standards identified in terms of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act.

The intention is to increase the sulphur dioxide (SO2) new plant emission limit from 500mg/Nm3 to 1000mg/Nm3 for Solid Fuel Combustion Installations.

Environmental justice groups are planning to take the matter to court in a bid to stop the increase of SO2 – a pollutant that can affect the respiratory system and lung infection.
