Department of Labour
The Draft Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Bill will be tabled before cabinet in August 2018 for approval.
In a statement, the department added that the draft bill will then be published for comment.
The rehabilitation and reintegration of injured workers to the workplace will be one of the key amendments contained in the draft bill.
The draft bill was first mentioned during the labour department’s budget vote speech in 2015.
At the time, the proposed legislation was described as designed to align the act with other labour legislations, and introduce provisions that provide a legal framework for the Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Fund to promote habilitation and rehabilitation programmes to facilitate a return to work objective.
The proposed legislation seeks to extend coverage to domestic workers as well as introducing enabling provisions for return to work, habilitation and rehabilitation.
