Department of Correctional Services
Directions to combat Covid-19 in correctional centres and remand detention facilities have been drawn up.
The correctional services department published the Directions in Government Gazette 44111 in terms of Disaster Management Act Regulations.
Safety and general measures for the duration of the national state of disaster are set out.
Measures include all inmates, upon admission, to be screened, quarantined and subjected to regulatory assessments prior to detention; all correctional officials must be screened on a daily basis at all entrances; visitors to correctional facilities must be screened; social distancing measures to apply; face mask compulsory and visits must be by appointment.
The Directions focus on restrictions regarding placement, movement and release of inmates, parolees and probationers; amenities, consultations and visits and remand detainees for the five alert levels.
Detail is also provided on areas declared as hotspots.
Previous Directions on correctional centres and remand detention facilities have been withdrawn.
The Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
