October 26, 2021

Department of Basic Education

Directions to combat Covid-19 in basic education have been amended.

The basic education department published the amended Directions in Government Gazette 45380 in terms of Disaster Management Act Regulations.

Subdirection 3 is added to Direction 4 stipulating that a principal of a school who convenes or hosts an event or activity can allow entry of permitted persons to the event or activity at the school provided that compliance with social distancing, hygiene and safety measures on Covid-19 is complied with.

A new Direction 11 is inserted.

It stipulates that contact sport, non-contact sport, including training, intra-school and inter-school matches, and all arts and culture intra-school and inter-school activities; co-curricular and enrichment programmes and choir practice or rehearsals and choir competitions can resume with spectators.

Health and safety measures that must be adhered to include face masks to be worn except when participating in training or matches accompanied by vigorous exercise; hand sanitizers with at least 70% alcohol content to be available; sharing of drinks and drink containers not allowed; all participants and any person who enters the venue must undergo health and temperature screening; a register of all officials, learners and spectators from visiting and hosting schools attending a school match or event must be kept for at least 21 days; spectators to be limited to 750 or less indoors and 2000 or less outdoors and, if the venue is too small to accommodate the numbers without adequate social distancing, then not more than 50 percent of the capacity of the venue may be used.

The amended Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
