Department of Basic Education

Directions on the reopening of schools and measures to combat Covid-19 in the basic education sector have been amended.

The basic education department published the amended Directions in Government Gazette 44779 in terms of Disaster Management Act Regulations.

A new sub-direction (1) is inserted into the Directions.

It stipulates that all schools for learners (grade R to 12) will close on 30 June 2021 and reopen on 19 July 2021.

Schools identified as vaccination sites will remain open for vaccines to be administered.

The National School Nutrition Programme will resume when schools reopen provided that schools make the necessary arrangements to continue to provide feeding until 9 July 2021 including food parcels.

The amended Direction also points out that the 2021 May/June National Senior Certificate/Senior Certificate examination will continue and conclude on 7 July 2021.

Independent schools are also instructed to close for contact classes for two weeks from 30 June 2021.

Primary schools (Grades R to 7) and schools for learners with special education needs (Grades R to 12) must finalise preparations in the week commencing on 19 July 2021 for the return to the daily attendance and traditional timetabling model on 26 July 2021.
