August 3, 2021

Department of Basic Education

Directions on the reopening of schools have been amended.

The basic education department published the amended Directions in Government Gazette 44922 in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

New sub-directions (1), (2), (3) and (4) are inserted into Direction 5A.

Sub-direction (2) stipulates that primary schools (for learners in Grades R to 7) must return to the traditional and daily attendance timetabling model from 2 August 2021 while sub-direction (3) stipulates that schools for learners with special education needs (Grades R to 12) must also return to the traditional and daily attendance timetabling model from 2 August 2021.

A new Direction 11 on sport and extracurricular activities stipulates that contact sport, non-contact sport, including training, intra-school and inter-school matches, and all arts and culture intra-school and inter-school activities, may resume without any spectators.

Other activities that resume include moot court; speech contests; debates; choir competitions and national, provincial, district championships and tournaments for both contact and non-contact sport that require learners to travel to other schools or provinces.

The amended Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
