Directions on Taxi Relief Fund Drawn Up

Directions on the Taxi Relief Fund to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in the taxi industry have been drawn up.

The transport department published the Directions in Government Gazette 44381 in terms of Disaster Management Act Regulations.

The Directions are designed to provide for the Taxi Relief Fund.

They are applicable to the taxi operators, e-hailing and minibus associations.

As part of transitional arrangements for taxi formalization, all taxi operators will be required to transfer their operating licenses to business entities within seven years from the date of submission of the application for the Taxi Relief Fund; register employees with the Unemployment Insurance Fund within two years of the date of application and ensure that motor cars, mini-buses and midi-buses under finance change from the owner to the company within five years.

Applications are invited until 30 September 2021.

The National Empowerment Fund will be the Implementation Agency to administer the relief scheme’s payment system to the taxi industry.

The Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
