Directions on Marking School Exam Scripts Drawn Up

January 11, 2021

Department of Basic Education

Directions designed to provide guidelines to officials, educators and administration staff marking examination scripts for the 2020 National Senior Certificate and Senior Certificate examinations were published at the end of December.

The basic education department published the amended Directions in Government Gazette 44054 in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

A new Direction 15A on Health, Safety and Hygiene Protocols for Marking and Assessments is inserted.

It stipulates that all officials, markers, senior markers, deputy chief markers, chief markers and internal moderators must wear face masks; adhere to health and hygiene protocols issued by the basic education minister and maintain a distance of at least one and a half metres from each other.

Venues for marking may not exceed 50% of the capacity of the facility in terms of accommodation of staff.

All staff are expected to possess a “permit which corresponds with Form 7 Annexure A of the Regulations which will be issued by the Head of Department or the person duly authorized by him or her”.

The amended Directions came into force on the date of publication.
