April 6, 2022

Department of Basic Education

Directions on the full-time return of learners to schools have been amended.

The basic education department published the amended Directions in Government Gazette 46172.

A new sub-direction (3) is inserted into Direction 4.

It stipulates that school principals may allow permitted persons to attend events, activities or gatherings on school premises provided that hygiene and safety measures are adhered to.

A new sub-direction (3) is also inserted into Direction 5 stipulating that “primary schools, secondary schools and schools for learners with special education needs, including hostels, must ensure strict compliance with the DBE Standard Operating Procedures, the Directions and the Regulations”.

Direction 10 gets a new heading on management of symptoms.

It outlines measures to deal with learners presenting with Covid-19 symptoms at school.

A new sub-direction (5) in Direction 11 stipulates that the wearing of face masks is mandatory for every person when in an indoor public place, excluding a child under the age of six years.

The amended Directions came into effect on the date of publication.
