May 22, 2020

Department of Transport

Directions designed to provide for improved access and hygiene and disinfection control at driving licence testing centres have been drawn up.

The transport department published the Directions on the determination of commencement of services and extension for validity period of learner’s licences, driving licence cards, licence discs, professional driving permits and registration of motor vehicles in Government Gazette 43339.

The Directions also apply to registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools.

They also provide for the validity period of licences and the resumption of services at driving licence testing centres, registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools.

The Directions stipulate that all driving licence testing centres, registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools must, prior to the commencement of their service on 1 June 2020, put in place procedures for the cleaning and disinfection of their premises.

They also need to have measures in place to adhere to social distancing to curb the spread of COVID-19.

All people entering driving licence testing centres, registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools need to wear a cloth face mask or a homemade mask that covers the nose and mouth.

The Directions also stipulate that all learner’s licences, driving licences, temporary driver’s licences, motor vehicle licence disks, temporary permits, roadworthy certificates and professional driving permits that expire during the period from 26 March 2020 up to and including 31 May 2020 are deemed to be valid and the validity period is further extended by 90 days from 1 June 2020.

The Directions declare that all driving licence testing centres, registering authorities, vehicle testing stations and driving schools will resume duties on 1 June 2020.
