Deregistration of AMCU Suspended

September 3, 2019

Department of Employment and Labour

3 September 2019

The deregistration of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has been suspended.

In a statement, the employment and labour department announced that the decision was taken following written representations from AMCU.

In April 2019, the department announced its intention to cancel the registration of AMCU.

According to the earlier notice, the Registrar of Labour Relations, Lehlohonolo Molefe, indicated that the intention to cancel the registration of AMCU was due to the trade union having ceased to function in terms of its constitution and not being a genuine trade union as envisaged in the act.

In the latest statement, the department indicated that, subsequent to the issuing of the notice by the Registrar to deregister the union, a meeting was held at the request of AMCU at which detail on preparation for the trade unions national congress was provided.

“Having considered further representations by AMCU which include supporting documents, the Registrar has taken a decision not to continue with the deregistration of AMCU,” said Molefe.

The national congress is scheduled for 18–20 September 2019.
