Deployment of 2 122 SANDF Members Extended

February 12, 2021

Department of Defence

The employment of 2 122 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to assist with the enforcement of Covid-19 lockdown regulations has been extended.

The defence department announced the extension in Government Gazette 44138 in terms of Section 19(2) of the Defence Act.

Section 19 focuses on the employment of the SANDF in co-operation with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

In January 2021, president Ramaphosa wrote to parliament informing the joint standing committee on defence of the employment of the 2 122 SANDF members to support other departments in the fight against Covid-19.

The deployment initially ran from 29 December 2020 to 31 January 2021.

It now applies from 1 February 2021 until 28 February 2021.

In the letter informing parliament of the extension, the president pointed out that the members were employed to support other government departments and in cooperation with the SAPS under adjusted level 3 regulations.
