Decadal Plan for STI on Track

November 12, 2020

Department of Science and Innovation

The science and innovation department has made significant progress in the development of the first Decadal Plan for Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).

In a statement, the ministry of higher education, science and technology pointed out that the new White Paper on STI will be implemented through the Decadal Plan.

The higher, education, science and technology minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, confirmed that the “framework for the Decadal Plan, as well as institutional and strategic reviews and a foresight exercise to identify STI priority areas” have been completed.

The minister added that the Decadal Plan will be finalised by the end of the 2020/21 financial year.

In order to ensure that the Decadal Plan was aligned with other government master plans, the department plans to consult the agriculture, land reform and rural development, mineral resources and energy, health and trade, industry and competition departments, among others.

Speaking earlier in the year during the department’s 2020/21 Budget Vote, the minister indicated that the overarching goal of the Decadal Plan is to increase the contribution of the National System of Innovation to the achievement of South Africa’s national objectives.

“This will be done by enhancing innovation and experimentation, and by accelerating the use of tried and tested approaches to successfully introduce innovation for transformative social and economic change,” he said.

The minister congratulated the department for receiving three consecutive clean audits.
